A light gray tone is among the most universal variants of covering and suits everywhere you want to give the surfaces the rendering of fabric but not a pronounced color. The material is printed digitally on a transparent film, so the final lightness arises only in combination with your own finish.
In photographs of the period it is apparent that the covering was never perfectly smooth. Between the ribs the linen sagged slightly, tapes ran over the seams and in sharp light a sieve-like weave of fibers showed through. A model whose surfaces are merely sprayed in one uniform color lacks this impression, even if the shade is spot on. A printed rendering can even the difference out in a moment and without having to paint every surface laboriously one by one.
Polish the base smooth, otherwise every unevenness will show through the thin film. Make the cuts with a sharp knife along a ruler and leave yourself a margin for folding over the leading edge. Once dry, go over the surface with a semi-matte clear coat, which hides the joints and unifies the sheen of the whole model. Keep the remains of the sheet; they will serve for patches and for narrow strips over the ribs.
