About product

The real subject

Lozenge is the name for the printed camouflage pattern of polygons with which German aircraft were covered in the First World War. It was not a finish: the pattern was printed directly on the covering linen, which was then stretched over the framework. This saved paint and weight alike, and from above the machine was harder to tell from the terrain. The patterns differed in the number of shades, and the upper surfaces had a different color set from the lower ones, because from above the camouflage worked against the ground and from below against the sky. This sheet covers the four-color form for the upper surfaces and has a suggested linen texture, so the surface does not come across as a smooth film.

How the lozenge is applied

Working with a large area of decals calls for calm and for going piece by piece. Go over the base with a gloss clear coat, cut the sheet into strips matching the width of the covering strips on the real subject and apply them one after another from the leading edge. Soak each strip in lukewarm water, let it rest, move it into place and press the water out from under it with a soft cloth from the center to the edges. A decal softener is in order here: it helps the film settle into the hollows between the ribs, which give a wing its characteristic undulating profile. Plan the transitions between the strips beforehand, so that the pattern follows on, and let each strip dry out properly before you touch the one next to it.

  • Decals of the lozenge pattern in the four-color form for the upper surfaces
  • 1:32 scale, a suggested linen texture
  • Wet decals, applied after soaking in water
  • A gloss base and a decal softener are recommended

Who it is for

For modelers of German aircraft of the First World War in the large scale who want the covering in a printed pattern and do not want to spray it laboriously. The model, paints and clear coat are not part of the sheet, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

A printed camouflage pattern of polygons with which German aircraft were covered in the First World War. The pattern was printed directly on the covering linen.

The upper and the lower surfaces had a different color set. From above the camouflage worked against the terrain, from below against the sky.

Cut the sheet into strips matching the width of the covering strips on the real subject and apply them one at a time from the leading edge, letting each dry out.

It helps a great deal. Thanks to it the film settles into the hollows between the wing ribs, where it would otherwise stay taut and might ripple.
