Aircraft of the First World War are built above all in the large 1:32 scale, where the rigging wires, the covering and the open cockpit stand out. But it is exactly there that it tends to show that nobody is standing by the machine. The figure 1:32 Fighter Pilot 1914-1918 N°1 from the brand Black Dog model fills this gap and at the same time gives the viewer a scale by which the size of a biplane is grasped at once.
A grassy field airfield suggests itself, a simple canvas hangar and a machine ready for takeoff. A figure placed by the fuselage works as the starting point of the eye; when you put it slightly to one side, the impression of the moment before takeoff arises. The numbering in the name hints that this is one piece from a more numerous line, so it can be combined with further figures into a group.
Figures in 1:32 are large enough for it to pay to work with transitions. A base layer, a dark shadow in the folds and lightened edges give the clothing softness. Devote the most time to the face - on a figure of this size it is the first place the viewer looks. Choose subdued colors and unify them with the palette of the base.
Keep the base restrained. For scenes from the beginning of aviation a grassy surface is enough, a rut from the wheels and a few blades of taller grass at the edge - richly broken-up terrain would draw attention away from the figure.
