Injection-molded plastic kit in 1:32 scale from the Japanese manufacturer Hasegawa. Large scales have long been a benchmark at Hasegawa: finely engraved panel lines, accurate shapes and the famously excellent fit that gets by almost without filler. The box contains gray plastic, clear parts and decals; the basic release offers two canopy variants (flat and bulged). Let us be honest: the mold dates from 2003. That is an older tool by today's standards, so do not expect an exposed engine, an internal structure or riveting at the level of the newest molds. What you do get is a model that is very accurate in shape, builds well and has been proven over the years. For accessories (photo-etch, resin, masks) it is one of the best supported kits of all.
The Fw 190D-9 is the late version of the Fw 190 and can be told apart from the ordinary Anton (Fw 190A) at first glance. While the A version had the BMW 801 radial engine up front and a typically stocky nose, the D-9 received the liquid-cooled Jumo 213 V12 engine. That engine is considerably longer, so the aircraft gained a long, drawn-out nose, and to balance the center of gravity the rear fuselage was lengthened as well. Hence the nickname Langnasen-Dora, the long-nosed Dora. The change was not cosmetic: the D-9 markedly improved performance at higher altitudes, where the A versions fell behind, and it was among the best German fighters of the closing period of the war.
Dry-fit above all the wing root and glue with a thin plastic cement. A rewarding improvement that takes little effort: drill out the exhausts and the gun muzzles, because in 1:32 solid plastic shows a great deal. The landing gear legs are slender, so glue them carefully. On the large surfaces start with a primer and spray with an airbrush; late German camouflage with blotches on the fuselage comes out best freehand at low pressure. A gloss coat under the decals, then a panel wash and a matte varnish.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
