A collection of self-adhesive Montex masks in 1:32 scale for a model of the Gloster Gladiator Mk.I biplane. According to the name of the product it holds canopy glazing masks for the outside and the inside and two sets of marking masks, one British and one Norwegian. The product is an accessory for a model — the kit itself, the paints and the glue are not in the package. The exact make-up of the sheets is stated on the box.
The Gladiator was a British fighter biplane with a radial engine, an enclosed cockpit and four machine guns. Besides British service it reached further operators and, among other things, appeared in the fighting over Scandinavia in the spring of 1940, where the Norwegian air force put it into action in harsh conditions. The Norwegian machines have different national insignia and coloring, so a model differs markedly from the British version — and two sets of markings in one set give you the choice without having to buy another sheet.
The canopy of the Gladiator is divided into several frames with pronounced curves. It is precisely at the curves that you see whether a mask holds: straight sections adhere by themselves, but a curved edge tends to lift and paint runs under it. It helps to keep pressing the masking film down with a rounded point for a while after laying it on and to let it settle for a few minutes before you start spraying. Spray the frames with the interior color first, and only then with the exterior camouflage — the transition then looks credible even when seen into the cockpit.
Work on a degreased and cured finish. Lay the paint on thinly, square to the surface, with a short pause between coats. Lift the masks as soon as possible after spraying, ideally with an angled pull back across themselves rather than straight up — the edge of the finish then stays clean. Before finishing the model, check whether a lip is forming under the edge; if it is, level it with a very fine abrasive and polish it.
This is not a kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
