A set of shaped masking stencils for the cockpit frames of a model of the Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning II in 1:48 scale. The name of the set gives the Tamiya kit as what it is meant for.
The F-35B is the version of the Lightning II multi-role aircraft adapted for short takeoff and vertical landing. Behind the cockpit it has a lift fan covered by doors on the spine and an exhaust nozzle that swivels downwards for the vertical mode. It serves with the Marine Corps and with further operators and works from ships without a catapult as well as from short strips. The cockpit is covered by a single curved canopy with no transverse frame, so on a model it can be seen into right through and an imperfectly unmasked edge of the windscreen is noticeable at once.
On a smooth curved canopy tape bends in two directions at once and wrinkles when cut by hand. A stencil cut to shape seats into the curve without folds and keeps the same width of frame along its whole length.
Wash and degrease the clear part. Apply the stencils before spraying, press the edges down with a blunt tip and work in short sections on the curves. Apply the paint square to the surface and in thin coats. If you are painting the frames from inside as well, apply the interior shade before the exterior finish. Take the masks off while the coat has not yet fully cured and pull them away at a slant across themselves, not straight up.
The package contains masking stencils. The kit, paints and glue are not included, unless stated otherwise.
