GRU-7A seats for the F-14, 1:32 scale

Replacement GRU-7A ejection seats for models of the Grumman F-14 aircraft in the early form of the A and B versions, in 1:32 scale. The package contains two pieces, that is a set for both places in the cockpit. According to the name the seats are cut for kits from the Trumpeter brand and there are no belts in them.

Why change the seats

In the large scales the cockpit is the first place a viewer directs their eye, and the seat is the largest piece of equipment in it. The parts from a kit tend to be simplified, because the intricate shape of a seat can only be captured in one piece up to a point. A replacement part has more crisply drawn edges, handles and projections, and once painted it gives the cockpit a depth that paint alone cannot replace. In a two-seat cockpit the difference is doubled, because both seats are visible.

Building and painting tips

• The parts are not made of polystyrene; they are glued with cyanoacrylate glue.
• Cut surplus material away with a sharp blade a little clear of the part and sand the remainder off.
• Wash and degrease the seats before painting, otherwise paint will not hold.
• Belts are not included; obtain them separately or make them yourself from adhesive tape and thin wire.
• Try the seats in the cockpit dry before you close it; with replacement parts the floor or the rear bulkhead often has to be reworked.

For builders of Tomcats who leave the cockpit open, and for modelers to whom the seats from the kit look soft in detail. The work is manageable even for the less experienced, because this is the replacement of one assembly, not a rebuild of the whole cockpit.
