Films for the two-seat Ilyushin Il-2M3 ground-attack aircraft. The glazing is masked from two faces and the insignia are sprayed through a pair of stencils. A decal sheet is not stated here.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Il-2M3, type 3 in Soviet terminology, is the late form of the ground-attack aircraft in which the designers finally added a second seat with a gunner and a 12.7 mm UBT machine gun. Along with that came a swept outer wing, which put the center of gravity back where it belonged. The armored tub around the engine and the pilot stayed, because that was the whole idea of the aircraft. From 1943 it was built in numbers that have no equal in aviation history.
This item is an exception in the series: there are only films in the box, no decals. For Soviet markings that makes more sense than it might seem. In the late war period the red star was drawn with a white and often also a thin red border, that is in two or three layers one over another. Through a mask that is done by spraying a white base over the larger shape first and then the red fill through a smaller mask, so the border arises precisely and with no film.
Layering means that the paint has to dry thoroughly between passes, otherwise lifting the upper film peels the lower layer away too. Anyone reckoning on supplementary markings for a particular regiment has to obtain decals separately. It is equally worth noting that the inner mask has to be applied before the clear part is glued to the fuselage, otherwise nobody can reach the frames from inside. Whoever puts that step off is usually left only with regret. The model is not in the box.
