The skull with crossed bombs of the 90th Bombardment Group is the core of the set 1:32 Jolly Rogers B-24 Liberator 90BG (Heavy) Insignia Paint Mask Set, with stencils for the insignia, the numbers and the rudder stripes.
Responsibility details are not available.
Three sheets of pre-cut masks cover the marking that most machines of the 90th Bombardment Group carried: the national insignia, the tactical numbers, two types of the emblem of a skull with crossed bombs and the colored rudder stripes. The set thus offers the means to spray the whole marking of one particular unit.
The 90th Bombardment Group flew Liberators in the South West Pacific and on its vertical tail surfaces carried a pronounced pirate emblem, which differed from machine to machine in size and in execution. The damp tropical climate and the sand of the bases did the finishes no good, so the insignia tended to be chipped, faded and sometimes painted over. It is precisely that state which is easier to imitate in sprayed paint than with a decal.
Small shapes are prone to paint running under. It helps to go over them first with a thin layer of the shade on which the mask lies; that seals the edge and any leak is hidden. Only then does the color of the emblem itself go on top, again in two passes. With the rudder stripes leave enough time between colors, so that the tape does not stick into a fresh film. It also pays to start with the largest insignia and leave the small emblems until last, when you already have the technique in hand.
The set deals exclusively with the marking; the finish of the fuselage and wings is up to the modeler.
