Masking of the national insignia for the Kawasaki Ki-61 Hien in 1:32 scale. The hinomaru is sprayed in paint directly onto the airframe.
Responsibility details are not available.
A set for spraying the Japanese insignia onto a model of the Kawasaki Ki-61. A large scale reveals every detail of the surface, and that is exactly where it pays to deal with the markings in paint: the circle follows the curvature of the fuselage and the wing precisely, carries no step across engraved detail and does not have to be filled in with clear coat to make its edge disappear.
The Ki-61 Hien was an exception among Japanese fighters. It was powered by a liquid-cooled V engine, so it had a slim, pointed nose quite unlike the radial types. At first the Allies confused it with a licensed German or Italian fighter and assigned it the code name Tony. When engines later ran short, a radial-engined version designated Ki-100 was created out of airframes still on the line.
The slim fuselage of the Hien has a fairly small side area, so the insignia takes up a lot of room in its place and an inaccuracy is visible immediately. Check the position from eye level before spraying. Choose an opaque color and apply it in several thin passes; one heavy spraying creates a ridge around the circumference. After removing the masking, let the insignia cure before you set about a wash or pigments.
A model of the Hien is bought separately, and this is a masking set.
