About product

Macchi MC.202 Folgore 1:32, Italeri

Injection-molded plastic kit of the best-known Italian fighter of the Second World War in 1:32 scale. It is a completely new mold from Italeri, built to present-day standards: a richly detailed cockpit supplemented with 3D decals, a well-rendered engine and machine gun bay in the nose, landing gear with optional covers, and a set of photo-etched parts (engine, flaps, cockpit, small fittings). In this scale you get a model of a size that deserves a place in the display case, and at the same time a scale in which every detail and every flaw in the surface can be seen.

The real subject

The Macchi MC.202 Folgore (lightning) came about through an elegant solution: the designers took the airframe of the older MC.200 and fitted it with the Daimler-Benz DB 601 inverted V12 engine, built in Italy under license. The result was a slim, pointed nose, markedly better aerodynamics and a speed of over 600 km/h. The Folgore thus ranked among the best Italian fighters of its day, and in the hands of experienced Regia Aeronautica pilots it was an even match for Allied types. Early versions carried a pair of 12.7 mm Breda-SAFAT machine guns in the nose. The later MC.205 Veltro development used the more powerful DB 605.

Building and painting tips

Build the model with liquid cement for plastic, which is drawn into the joints by capillary action; in this scale coarse deposits of glue show mercilessly. Finish and paint the engine and the cockpit before you close the fuselage. Glue the photo-etched parts with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Sand the surface carefully and spray primer before painting, because it reveals scratches and unfilled gaps. The Italian camouflage with its typical smoke ring mottling is ideal work for an airbrush; put a gloss coat under the decals and unify the surface with a matte coat at the end.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers who want a large, representative piece for the display case
  • Fans of Italian air power and of Second World War fighters
  • More experienced builders, because a large scale forgives fewer flaws in the surface
  • Anyone who will appreciate a detailed engine and cockpit straight from the box

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It was created by fitting the airframe of the older MC.200 with the license-built German Daimler-Benz DB 601 inverted V12 engine. That gave it a slim, pointed nose, better aerodynamics and a speed of over 600 km/h, and it ranked among the best Italian fighters of the Second World War.

Rather for a more advanced modeler. The 1:32 scale means large areas on which every unevenness shows, and the box also contains photo-etched parts. An experienced builder, however, will get an above-average result from it even without extras.

The MC.202 Folgore used the license-built DB 601. The later MC.205 Veltro received the more powerful DB 605 and heavier armament, so it is a separate, more capable stage of development.

Liquid cement for plastic, cyanoacrylate glue for the photo-etch, primer, paints (ideally for an airbrush), a gloss coat under the decals and a matte coat at the end.
