A self-adhesive masking set from the Dead Design brand in 1:32 scale intended for spraying the national insignia onto a model of the McDonnell F-4G Phantom II. Unlike the sister items of the same range, which deal with the cockpit glazing, this set aims at the markings of the aircraft. It is neither an aircraft kit nor decals, but masks. The exact number of pieces and the extent of the markings are not stated here.
The F-4G is the two-seat variant of the Phantom II derived from the F-4E version, reworked for finding and suppressing ground radars. The national marking of US Air Force aircraft takes the form of a star in a circular field with bars on either side and repeats in several places on the fuselage and the wings. Spraying a marking beats a decal on two counts that matter at the bench: nothing glossy rings the motif, so no silvering shows, and pigment grips even where the camouflage is flat and broken up. That makes the set a choice for anyone who would rather have the insignia live in the paint than sit on it as a film.
Everything rests on the state of the paint underneath: bone dry and smooth, or pigment creeps beneath the edge. Lift each piece into position, then work your way round it with a fingernail, taking broken-up areas a short stretch at a time. Lay down a pale ground coat before anything else, since the finishing shade has to read over dark camouflage, and bring in the colors of the insignia after that. Hold the airbrush square to the panel and keep the coats thin. When the last one has set, lift a corner with tweezers and draw the piece away almost flat against the skin of the model. Everything nearby wants shielding first, with tape or with masking putty.
This is an accessory for the build. The aircraft model, paints and glue are not included in the package.
