A basic set of photo-etched parts in brass sheet for a plastic model of the Soviet heavy tank KV-1 in the production form of 1942, scale 1:35. The set does not make up a model — it is a detailing accessory that is fitted to a kit under construction.
The KV-1 is interesting for its contrast: the hull and the turret themselves are massive and plastic handles their thickness without trouble, but everything hung on them is made of thin sheet. The long fenders running the whole length of the vehicle, their struts, the tool boxes, the holders for spare track links and the rims above the running gear — in plastic these are parts that have to be many times thicker than the scale would call for, for the sake of the mold and of strength. On a fender that is most conspicuous seen from behind and from the side, where the edge stands out against the background like a plank. A brass fender has a thin edge and on top of that can be bowed, dented or partly bent upward, the way these vehicles commonly looked.
The long fenders are the biggest challenge of the whole set. Make the bend in a bending tool in one go along the whole length; bending it in sections will create a wave that you will not get rid of. If the sheet is stiff and there is a risk of it cracking in the groove, it can be annealed before bending: run it briefly through a flame, let it cool, and the brass will soften. Anneal carefully, though, and only the part on its own, never on the model. After bending, check the flatness against the light on glass — a warped fender cannot be put right on the model with glue. Glue it to the plastic in stages: fix both ends first, check that it runs parallel with the hull, and only then glue on the middle struts.
The set is an accessory, not a kit. The model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
