An individual figure from the numerous line of American maintenance men that the brand Black Dog carries in the large 1:32 scale. The number five in the name points to the position in this line; the individual stances differ from one another so that they can be built side by side.
The ground crew decided how many machines were serviceable in the morning. It was continuous work with tools, fuel and lubricants, often in bad weather and away from workshop facilities. For a modeler that means an opportunity an aviation figure does not offer: a mechanic is allowed to be grimy, with greasy stains on the knees and with hands darker than the face.
The key lies in the placing, not in the amount. Dirt belongs where it arises - on the knees, on the cuffs of the sleeves, on the backs of the hands, on the lower part of the trouser legs. Use a dark glaze rubbed into the folds and dry pigment only in a thin layer. Leave the rest of the fabric clean, because the contrast of a clean and a dirty place does more than graying over the whole area. Dirty the face sparingly, so that it stays readable. And do not forget that grease has a different character than dust: it has a sheen, it stays in place and it never covers a continuous area.
