Pre-cut self-adhesive painting masks in 1:32 scale from Art Scale. These are not a kit or spare parts but an aid for painting: you stick the masks onto the clear parts, they cover the transparent areas and leave only the cockpit framing exposed. You then spray the framing at the same time as the airframe and the paint transition has a sharp, straight edge. The single-sided version deals with the outer side of the glazing. The set is cut to the shape of the parts of a particular kit in this scale, so with a kit of other origin it is advisable to test the fit dry first. The masks are cut for the Revell kit.
The Messerschmitt Bf 109 G series was a German single-seat fighter powered by an inverted V12 Daimler-Benz DB 605 engine. The G-2 and G-4 versions are very close in airframe and differ mainly in equipment, above all the radio set; both still carried the smooth cowling over the forward fuselage without the prominent bulges over the gun breeches of later machines. The cockpit consists of a fixed front section, a hinged center canopy with a side frame and the rear glazing. The frames are narrow and irregular, so cutting tape by hand is tedious and the result tends to be uneven.
Wash the clear parts first in lukewarm water with detergent and let them air dry. Pop the masks out of the sheet with the tip of a scalpel and carry them with tweezers. Lay them in the middle of the area, press toward the edges and smooth the edge down with a toothpick so that no paint runs under it. At corners and rounded sections the outline sometimes has to be trimmed with a fresh blade right on the part. Spray the interior color first, then the base shade and finally the camouflage, always in thin coats at right angles to the surface. As soon as the paint has flashed off, lift the mask by pulling it back at an angle over itself so that it does not tear the edge of the finish.
The masks are an aid for painting, not a kit or spare parts. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
