About product

Mitsubishi J2M2/J2M3/J2M5/J2M6 Raiden - landing gear bay masks 1:32

A masking set for the landing gear bays of a model of the Japanese Mitsubishi Raiden interceptor in 1:32 scale. These are not parts for the build but self-adhesive templates cut to the shape of the bay, which close off its inside while the outer surface is sprayed.

One set, several subversions

The designation in the name gives four subversions of the Raiden at once, so the set is not tied to a single one of them. For the builder that means the templates fit the shape of the bay that stayed the same across these versions, which makes sense on the Raiden, because the differences between the individual J2M versions were concentrated mainly in the engine, the armament and the canopy, not in the landing gear.

The order of painting is not arbitrary

The interior of the bay has a different shade on a model than the outer surfaces of the airframe. The procedure is therefore always the same: spray the bay, let it dry through, cover it with the mask, and only then spray the airframe. Anyone who reverses that has to finish painting a deep and poorly accessible part with a brush over a finished coat, and that is work that shows in a large scale.

Working in the depth of the part

A bay is an enclosed opening with corners your finger cannot reach. The best way is to lay the template on dry, align it with the edge of the opening and then press the whole perimeter down with a toothpick or the blunt tip of a pair of tweezers; an edge that is not pressed down is the only place paint gets inside. Spray in shorter bursts and at lower pressure, so that the stream of paint does not look for a way under the film. Take the mask off as soon as the varnish has set; the edge tears off a hard layer.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of several versions of the Raiden who do not want to buy a set for each one separately
  • Modelers building a model with open bays and the gear down
  • Those who want a clean boundary between the shade of the bay and the outer finish
  • Anyone who wants to save themselves touching up a deep part with a brush

FAQ

The name gives the J2M2, J2M3, J2M5 and J2M6, so the templates are cut to the shape of the bay common to these subversions. The full contents are stated on the box.

It covers the painted interior of the bay so that the top coat cannot get into it while the outer surface is sprayed. The bay thus keeps its own shade and the transition between it and the airframe is crisp.

You will not reach them with a finger; use a toothpick or the blunt tip of a pair of tweezers and press the whole perimeter down. An edge that is not pressed down is exactly where paint creeps under.

It is not. It is an aid to painting. Once the spraying is done the mask is taken off and no trace of it is left on the finished model.
