Masks for the wooden de Havilland Mosquito FB Mk.VI fighter-bomber in 1:32 scale. The set holds films for the cockpit glazing from both faces, three sets of national insignia and decals.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Mosquito in its FB Mk.VI version was a fighter-bomber with a solid nose: instead of a glazed navigator's position it carried four cannon in the floor of the nose and four machine guns above them. A structure of plywood and balsa gave it a speed that even single-seat fighters could not cope with for a long time, and the crew sat side by side under a cover made of flat panes with an exit hatch in the side.
It is precisely the fact that the glazing is assembled from flat surfaces that makes masking a different task from the teardrop covers of single-seat fighters. The edges are long and straight, so any imprecision shows on them at once, and there are many frames. Die-cut film holds the edge along its whole length, clings to a flat pane without folds and lets the inner and the outer framing be sprayed in one sequence.
Roundels sprayed through a mask look different on a large twin-engine machine from a decal. They have no glossy carrier film, they do not follow unevenness in the skin and they can easily be dusted with a light coat of the base color to look worn. Degrease the surface before applying the film and, after spraying, let the finish only flash off, as a finished hard film tears against the edge of a mask.
