This is a kit of an unmanned target drone in 1:32 scale. The real thing is small, so the model stays modest in size too, while the large scale makes it markedly detailed. The same subject also exists in 1:72 and 1:48 scale, which makes building a comparative series easier. The material of the parts is not stated here.
The MQM-74A Chukar belongs to the family of small jet target drones that served from the 1960s on for training the crews of anti-aircraft gun and missile systems. The drone was launched with a booster rocket or from a carrier, its flight was controlled by a ground station, and once the task was done the target was recovered by parachute so that it could be used again. Reusability was in fact the main reason the whole category existed: practicing gunnery against a real aircraft would have been unbearably expensive. The design is simple, with a cigar-shaped fuselage, a small straight wing and a single jet engine, and is completed by launch and handling equipment.
Dry-fit all the main parts before gluing; with short-run production it is to be expected that the joints will need light sanding. If the parts are cast in resin, wash them in lukewarm water with detergent so that the primer holds on them, cut the casting blocks off with a saw and do the sanding wet and with respiratory protection; they are glued with super glue. On parts of ordinary plastic use thin cement for plastic applied by capillary action. Targets of this kind tend to be sprayed in service in a striking, uniform finish so that they show up well against the sky, which is why it pays to spend time on a smooth base: a primed base, thin even coats and gloss varnish under the decals. Heavy weathering does not suit this subject; discreet traces of handling and light dirt around the nozzle are enough.
