Masking set for the Finnish Morane-Saulnier MS.406 in 1:32 scale. It masks the canopy from two faces and carries two masks for the national insignia.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Morane-Saulnier MS.406 reached Finland at the end of the Winter War and lasted with the Finnish Air Force considerably longer than in its country of origin. Finnish technicians gradually turned it into a different aircraft: they replaced the weak V12 with a captured Soviet twelve-cylinder and reworked the cooling circuit and the nose. The rebuilt examples were given a nickname derived from a bogeyman and, with performance the original machine never had, served to the end of the fighting.
The Finnish national insignia is geometrically simple, but it sits on large areas of both the wing and the fuselage. A decal that size gives itself away on a matte finish by its glossy edge and breaks over riveted seams. A sprayed insignia has no edge at all and merges into the paint, so the tedious settling with softeners falls away too.
A sprayed insignia needs a solid white base coat, otherwise the fuselage color shows through it. Add two more drying times, then, and the precise alignment of the mask on the second pass.
Press the edges of the mask down with a dry point along their whole length. An unseated corner is the only place where the paint gets under the paper.
The set deals with the glazing and the national insignia, nothing more. Serial numbers, squadron markings, any yellow recognition areas and small inscriptions have to come from elsewhere, most often from decals. Go through the subject before you buy paints, then, so that you are not left mid-build with finished camouflage and no markings. The number of insignia masks differs from box to box, so it cannot be guessed from another sheet.
