Landing gear bay masks for the Nakajima Ki-44 Shoki in 1:32 scale. They close off the openings of the bays for as long as the primer and the camouflage are sprayed onto the airframe.
Responsibility details are not available.
A masking set intended for the landing gear bays of a Nakajima Ki-44 Shoki model in 1:32 scale. The masks are inserted into the open bays and stay there throughout the painting of the outside of the model.
Where the damage arises
An airbrush does not spray a narrow beam but a cone with misting around the edges. It is precisely that fine misting which gets even where the modeler is not aiming; the air from the nozzle carries it into an open bay. The subsequent repair with a brush tends to be worse than the original mistake: thick paint from a brush has a different texture from a sprayed surface, and in a deep part you will not reach the corners anyway. A mask is therefore a simpler and quicker route than touching up later.
The Nakajima Ki-44 Shoki was a fighter of the Japanese Army Air Force which, unlike the agile types of its day, concentrated on speed and rate of climb and was used above all for interception. The design with its short, robust fuselage and massive engine cowling is very rewarding in 1:32 scale, and the larger the model, the more every detail of the underside of the wing shows, bays included.
Degrease the mask and its surroundings before applying it; grease from the fingers is the most common reason an edge lifts after a while. Keep the airbrush pressure rather low; at high pressure the stream of paint bounces off the surface and looks for a way under the edge. If you paint the bay in a light interior shade and the airframe gets a dark camouflage, add one very light pass around the mask first; any bleed will then not look like a sharp line on a light base. Remove the mask while the top color is only just set.
