Decals for a model of the American North American P-51D-5 Mustang fighter in 1:32 scale. It is an accessory for a plastic kit: the decal sheet replaces the markings supplied in the kit, or extends them with further options. Which particular aircraft the sheet covers and how they are finished is given in the instructions supplied by the manufacturer with the set.
The Mustang was one of the most successful American fighters of the Second World War and the D version is its best known form: it has a cut-down rear fuselage and a teardrop canopy that opened up the pilot view to the rear. Early D-5 machines still lacked the dorsal fillet ahead of the fin that later Mustangs carried; it was added only later. Mustang color schemes tend to be striking, and it is the markings that make these aircraft recognizable at first glance.
Coat the surface under the decal with gloss varnish; on a matte surface a white bloom would form under the film. Cut the decal close to the edge, soak it in warm water and let it rest until it slides off the backing. Put it in place, blot off the excess water and use a decal softener so that the film settles into the panel lines. Once dry, even out the whole surface with matte or semi-gloss varnish.
