The program to acquire fifth-generation aircraft marked another turning point for the Polish Air Force. The contract for thirty-two F-35As was signed at the beginning of 2020 and the aircraft were given a national name referring to the winged riders from the age of the greatest glory of Polish arms. Crew training started overseas, because the home infrastructure for the type was still being built. Alongside the F-16, Poland is thus gaining capabilities that cannot be added by upgrading older equipment.
Aircraft with a reduced radar signature cannot take the usual richly colored insignia, and the sheet respects that. It offers Polish checkerboards in a low-contrast rendition, aircraft numbers in muted shades and airframe stencil markings that are deliberately subdued on the real machine so as not to disturb the surface. It is exactly this restraint that makes an F-35 model a different discipline from building older types.
The key is not to overdo the contrast. The decals go onto a smoothly polished base and, once dry, the whole model is unified with matte varnish so that no area is left looking different. Since the real insignia are only a shade lighter than the surrounding finish, it pays to check the result in daylight before the final coat. In 1:32 scale the model is about forty-nine centimeters long.
The moment this set captures is interesting for a modeler as well: the arrival of the type in an air force that had until then relied on quite different equipment. Generational turning points like this are rewarding to document in a display case, especially with a model of the direct predecessor standing next to it.
