The number of markings on an airframe is not arbitrary and it changed during the war. At first the rule was that a marking belonged on both sides of the fuselage and on the upper and the lower surface of both wings, that is in six places. In 1942 the regulation narrowed: the markings stayed on the upper left and the lower right wing and on both sides of the fuselage. The reason was an effort to reduce conspicuousness from above while keeping legibility for anyone observing the aircraft from below. Sets of three or four masks are therefore not impoverished; they simply match how many markings really belonged on an aircraft in the given period.
The Dauntless had perforated dive brakes which damped the buffeting during a diving attack and held the machine on an exact path. It was neither fast nor well armored, and yet it was its crews who decided one of the key naval battles in 1942. The version designated by the number five received a stronger engine and is the most numerous of the whole line.
The glazing of the rear gun position is busy and masking it is more time-consuming than a single-seat cockpit. It pays to apply the masks one at a time and to press each one down with a wooden stick. Anyone who wants to make the work easier will assemble the rear part only after the markings are sprayed, because aiming a gun at a flat wing surface is considerably more comfortable than working between folded frames.
