Cut masks for the frames of the long cockpit of the late SBD-5 Dauntless dive bomber in 1:32 scale, outer and inner pieces.
Responsibility details are not available.
The SBD-5 was manufactured in the largest numbers of all the versions and came at a moment when the American aircraft carriers were already rearming with more modern Helldivers. Most of these machines therefore ended up with land-based Marine Corps squadrons, which marked their units with an abbreviation made up of letters and a number. From muddy airfields on New Georgia and on Bougainville they broke up Japanese positions around Rabaul, that is in a war where flying was not against ships but against stores, guns and bridges.
The US Army Air Forces got practically the same aircraft under the name Banshee, but with the fuselage number written in the army way and with no arrestor hook. A New Zealand squadron flew machines that carried a round insignia with a blue center, and French naval aviation used them even after the war over Indochina, where they had three-color stripes on the rudder. The same design thus carried four different systems of markings within a few years.
The cockpit reaches as far as the rear gun position, so there really are a lot of glazed fields here and work by hand would take more time than building the fuselage itself. Pre-cut stencils shorten it to a few minutes and above all guarantee that all the frames will be equally thick. The inner pieces belong on the frame as seen from inside the cockpit.
Before you lay the stencil on, check that no dust from sanding has stayed on the glazing. One grain under the film makes a visible notch in the edge of the frame.
