About product

Spitfire Mk.V, a 3D-printed interior on decal paper in 1:32 scale

A set of 3D-printed and already painted interior elements, printed on decal paper, for a model of the Spitfire Mk.V in 1:32 scale from Quinta Studio. It is not a model of the aircraft or a resin part to be glued but an accessory applied like a classic wet decal. The elements are not flat, though: the printing creates a real relief, so the instrument panels, side panels and other details have depth and at the same time are already finished in color.

Why a 3D decal instead of photo-etched metal

A classic photo-etched interior is thin sheet metal that has to be bent, glued with cyanoacrylate glue and only then painted and shaded. A three-dimensional decal merges that work into one step: the relief and the color are finished from the factory and the modeler deals only with the placement. It also removes the risk of cyanoacrylate glue leaving a white bloom on the paint around it.

The real subject

The Spitfire Mk.V was the most numerously produced version of the British Supermarine Spitfire fighter. It was powered by a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine and was built in several wing variants, which differed in armament. The cockpit kept the layout typical of the early Spitfires, including the characteristic ring grip on the control column.

How the set is applied

The surface should be smooth, clean and degreased, ideally coated with a gloss varnish. It is a good idea to sand the molded relief of the instrument panel on the plastic part flat first, so that the decal seats over its whole area. The element is cut out, immersed in lukewarm water for a few seconds and slid into place once it has released. The water beneath it has to be pressed out carefully with a soft brush or a cotton bud, not by pressing with a finger, so that the relief is not squashed. A decal softener and a setting solution do not belong on these elements, as their chemistry attacks the printed resin. Everything is applied before the fuselage is closed up.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of the Spitfire in 1:32 scale who want a convincing cockpit without photo-etched metal
  • Modelers who dislike painting small instrument dials
  • Those interested in a quicker route to a detailed interior
  • Those who plan to display a model with an open cockpit

This is an accessory for a plastic kit, not a model of the aircraft. Check the match with your kit before buying. Paints and glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

It is a decal. The elements are printed three-dimensionally directly on decal paper and are transferred to the model by the wet method like an ordinary decal, not by gluing.

No, the elements are colored from the factory. Only the surrounding surfaces of the cockpit that the set does not cover need painting.

On the instrument panel and broken-up panels it is advisable. The decal then seats over its whole area and no bubbles form under it.

The number of elements is given on the packaging of the set.
