About product

Masks for the national insignia for the Spitfire Mk.Vb/Trop in 1:32 scale

This set does not mask the glazing of the cabin but the national insignia. It contains precisely cut self-adhesive masks, by which the roundels are sprayed straight onto the paint of the model. The insignia thus arises as a part of the colored surface, not as a film laid on it.

Why a sprayed insignia instead of a decal

Every decal has a carrier film. On a flat or lightly textured finish it gives itself away by a fine glossy edge, which modelers call silvering, and it can be removed only laboriously with a glossy intermediate coat and softeners. A sprayed roundel has no film. It follows the surface, it takes the same handling as the paint around it and it can be oversprayed with a flat clear coat, weathered, dusted with pigment and lightly rubbed through at the exposed places of the wing without risk. In 1:32 scale that difference shows the most, because the insignia has a large diameter and any unevenness under it stands out.

How to work with the masks

A roundel is sprayed circle by circle, usually from the outer ring inward or in the order that corresponds to the covering power of the shades used. The base should be smooth and rather flat, so that the mask seats around its whole circumference. Press the edges down carefully with a toothpick or a wooden stick, spray thinly and in several coats and never straight on under high pressure, otherwise the paint will run under. Take the mask off with tweezers before the paint has cured completely; the edge is then sharper. The designation B Type refers to the period British two-color roundel without the white ring.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who are bothered by the visible edge of a decal in a large scale
  • Builds with marked weathering, where the insignia is rubbed through and weathered afterwards
  • Those who want the markings in the same layer of paint as the rest of the airframe
  • More experienced builders who work with an airbrush and multi-coat spraying

FAQ

They are not. This set is intended for the national insignia, that is, for the roundels. Masks for the glazing are a separate kind of product.

A sprayed insignia has no carrier film, so on a flat finish it does not create a glossy edge and it can go on being weathered and rubbed through like ordinary paint.

It is the period British designation of the type of national insignia. Type B is the two-color roundel without the white ring.

Yes, a mask holds best on a smooth, well cured and rather flat finish. The edges need to be pressed down around the whole circumference, so that the paint does not run under.
