1:32 Supermarine Spitfire Mk.I/II undercarriage bay paint masks are landing gear bay masks for a model of the early Spitfire versions in 1:32 scale. They cover the finished inside of the bay while the lower surfaces of the airframe are sprayed.
Responsibility details are not available.
The set is intended for masking the landing gear bays, not the glazing. On a model a bay is painted in a different shade from the surrounding airframe, and the masks make sure the finished interior is not fouled by the top coat of the lower surfaces.
The order of painting is always the same with bays: first the inside is sprayed, and only then are the lower surfaces closed up and painted. The trouble is that a bay is deep, has an irregular outline and in 1:32 scale a fair area as well, so masking it by hand with strips of tape takes a great deal of time and still leaves a ragged edge. On top of that the paint likes to creep under in the corners, where tape cannot be pressed down. A die-cut mask shortens that step to a few minutes and the edge around the opening comes out in one line.
Spray the inside of the bay and let it dry through properly, ideally overnight. Insert the mask dry, press it down all the way around and check against the light whether it is holding only at the edge somewhere. Then spray the lower surfaces thinly and rather from the side than perpendicularly into the bay. Before you take the masking off, run the point of a scalpel along the edge of the outline, so that the paint does not tear off where it should not. Remove any adhesive residue, should it appear, with alcohol on a cotton swab, not with an aggressive thinner.
