The photo-etched set Eduard 1:32 TBD-1 Devastator landing flaps replaces the plastic flaps of the base kit with fine metal etch. It is not a model but a detail accessory for 1:32 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
This item is not an aircraft kit but a photo-etched detail set from the Czech maker Eduard that you buy separately for a model. It replaces the landing flap parts, whose rendering in injection-molded plastic is necessarily simplified: plastic has a limited thickness and can suggest the internal structure of a flap only with a shallow relief. Etched metal, by contrast, is as thin as real sheet metal in scale, so the trailing edge stays sharp and the rib structure of the flap is visible as it should be.
It is in 1:32 scale that this pays off most. Here the flap is a large surface right in front of the viewer, and a model with the flaps lowered looks noticeably more alive than an aircraft in a clean flight configuration. In smaller scales such a detail would be lost; here it carries the whole impression of the underside of the wing.
The Douglas TBD-1 Devastator was a carrier torpedo bomber of the US Navy. When it entered service in the second half of the 1930s it was a modern all-metal monoplane with folding wings and an enclosed cockpit, that is a great step over the biplanes it replaced. By the start of the war in the Pacific it was already obsolete in concept and after 1942 it disappeared from front-line units. Its large span and the segmented high-lift devices of the wing make it a rewarding subject precisely for the large scales.
Cut the photo-etched parts from the fret with a sharp knife on a hard support and never break them out. Make the folds in a bending tool or between two razor blades so that the edge is straight along its whole length. Degrease the metal before painting and go over it with a primer meant for metals, otherwise the paint will not hold on the smooth surface. It is bonded with super glue applied with a pin in drops, and for larger surfaces a gel variant helps, as it gives time to line the part up. Allow for the fact that where the original plastic flaps were, the plastic will have to be carefully sanded away and the leading part of the wing reworked.
