Rolling Pin Greek - a texture roller with ancient Greek motifs

The roller carries decoration engraved around its circumference in an ancient Greek spirit. One pass transfers the pattern into soft modeling compound and gives you a continuous ornamental surface to use on figure plinths, architectural facing or the paving of a temple interior. The roller itself is not a consumable; it is a permanent tool that you use for an unlimited number of impressions.

How to get a clean impression

• Roll the compound out to an even layer, as uneven thickness makes the pattern press in shallowly in one part.
• Treat both the roller and the surface underneath with a release agent or with water, so that the compound does not catch in the engraved relief.
• Go in one pass, without stopping and without backing up; ornamental patterns are more sensitive to smearing than a coarse stone texture.
• On longer surfaces, join the impressions so that the seam falls on a vertical line of the decoration, and the transition then does not show.
• Before the compound hardens, tidy the edges with a scalpel and trim the area to the size of the part.

Painting the ornament

Ornamental relief lives on contrast. Spray a light stone base, go over it with a dark wash that flows into the hollowed lines and bring the high points out with a dry brush. If you want to age the stone, add a fine pigment into the recesses and leave the lighter areas clean, as the eye then perceives the relief more strongly.

Modeling compound, a release agent and paints are not included in the package. Clean the roller before the compound hardens on it, as dried compound is considerably harder to pick out of fine ornament than out of a coarse texture.
