A set of 3D-printed color decals from Quinta Studio in 1:32 scale for the interior of the TBF-1C Avenger. They are decals on decal paper with a printed three-dimensional layer of their own, printed straight in color. They are applied into a built and painted interior, where they take over the work that a coat by hand and the painting of dials would otherwise do. The set is designed for the Trumpeter kit.
The Grumman TBF Avenger was an American carrier torpedo bomber with a crew of three and a Wright radial engine. The TBF-1C version differed from the basic form in its armament: instead of a machine gun in the cowling it received a pair of weapons in the wing. The crew space on the Avenger is long and divided — the pilot's cockpit, the operator's station and the ventral gun position — so when building a model in 1:32 scale a great deal of the interior is visible. That is the main reason a decal set pays off on this type in particular.
First spray the base and polish it with gloss varnish — the element has no adhesive layer of its own and will not hold on a matte finish. Cut the sheet up into individual pieces, soak them in lukewarm water and let them rest for a while until the backing releases. Transfer a piece to its place, slide it off the backing and fine-tune the position while it is still wet. Blot the excess water away with a paper tissue and press the piece carefully into the relief, so that it beds down in the recesses too. Do not use a decal softener or a decal fixer: the chemicals attack the printed resin and would ruin the element, and the manufacturer forbids them on this range. Once dry it is a good idea to go over the surroundings with matte varnish, so that the sheen of the backing is not visible.
