A figure of a member of the deck crew of an American aircraft carrier from the 1941 to 1945 period in 1:32 scale from Black Dog, carried under the sequence number No. 4. During the war the flight deck was one of the busiest workplaces of all, and many trades went on there at once.
A deck scene has one great advantage over an airfield one: the groundwork is simple. A planked or steel surface with arrestor wires and low structures is easy to build, and all the attention then stays on the machines and the people. Place the figure in a relation to the aircraft rather than into empty space, so at a retracted hook, at a folded wing or in the path of a taxiing aircraft.
As early as the Second World War American aircraft carriers told the deck trades apart by the color of jerseys and helmets, so that in the noise everyone could see who was who. Yellow belonged to those who directed the movement of the machines, blue to the handlers at the wheels and on the tow, red to work with ammunition and to the fire parties, green to catapults and arresting gear, purple to refueling. The choice of shade is therefore not meant to be random: the color of the jersey states outright what the figure is doing in the scene, and when a larger group is built it gives the whole a legible order.
