A resin figure from the Czech maker Black Dog out of its range of aircrew. The 1:32 scale matches large aircraft models, so the figure serves as a scale comparison beside a model in a display case or as the basis of a small scene. It is supplied as a raw casting, unpainted, with casting blocks that are cut off before building.
A carrier aircraft pilot of the US Navy in the period from 1940 to 1945 was fitted out with a life vest, a parachute harness, a leather or cloth helmet and goggles. The gear was bulky and over the flight suit it made up a characteristic silhouette, which the figure captures well in this scale. The detail of the straps and buckles is cast more finely in resin than injection-molded plastic manages.
First wash the figure in lukewarm water with dish soap to remove the mold release agent; without that the paint will not hold on the surface. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a cutter, sand the parting seams, and do the sanding wet and with respiratory protection. A primer follows, ideally in a light shade, which brings out the shapes. Paint from the top down and from the large areas to the detail; leave the face until the end and build it up from several thin coats. The leather of the gear takes a dark wash and a fine highlight on the edges, and matte clear at the end unifies the surface.
The figure is supplied unpainted, as a resin casting. Paints, glue and an aircraft model are not included in the package.
