A turned metal pitot tube in 1:32 scale for models of American aircraft of the Second World War. A replacement for the thicker plastic part from the kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
A pitot tube is an air pressure probe from which an onboard instrument derives the airspeed. On aircraft of the Second World War it most often projected from under the wing or from the side of the fuselage, so as to reach undisturbed airflow. On a model it is a small thing the eye notices at once: it sticks out of the outline, so any excess thickness shows.
The turned metal part has a wall and a tip of a thickness that a plastic molding cannot manage, because the molding has to be considerably thicker for the sake of the mold and of strength. Metal moreover withstands handling during finishing and painting; a plastic tube breaks off readily and straightens badly. The part is intended for 1:32 scale, that is, for large models, where the difference in thickness is most conspicuous.
Cut the original plastic tube off at its root and level the surface. Drill a hole of the diameter matching the pin of the part as needed and fit it dry first, so as to check both the angle and the projection. It is glued with super glue applied in a small amount, for example with the tip of a toothpick; polystyrene cement will not join metal. Before painting, wash and degrease the metal and use a primer, otherwise the finish comes off the smooth surface. Fit the tube at the end of the build, so that it is not bent during further work. Which American type the part is cut for is not stated here; check it against the manufacturer's instructions.
A metal part is supplied. The kit, paints and glue are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
