This sheet from Quinta Studio deals with one particular but highly exposed detail: a wooden propeller. The texture of laminated wood is printed on decal paper and is applied directly onto the plastic propeller blades just like a decal. That does away with the hardest painting technique of old aircraft, namely drawing the layers of veneer by hand with glazes, where the result only comes off after several attempts. The set is cut for the Roden kit.
The propellers of aircraft from the First World War period were made by gluing several layers of wood of different shades together. After machining, a characteristic pattern appeared on the blade, which differed between propeller makers in the number as well as the color of the layers. The Axial and Wolff designations refer precisely to period propeller makers, not to a type of aircraft. Given the size of 1:32 scale, the propeller is one of the first details a viewer notices on a finished model.
First sand the propeller blade smooth and remove the mold seam, because every unevenness will show through the thin layer. Spray the base with a light color and go over it with a gloss coat. Soak a segment briefly in lukewarm water, transfer it onto the blade and draw the excess water off. Around the rounded edges work patiently and press the element down in several rounds with a damp cotton bud, because a printed layer gives way more slowly than an ordinary decal. Do not use a decal softener or a decal fixer, as the chemicals attack the printed resin. Finally cover the leading edge and the transitions with a matte or satin coat, which takes the artificial gloss off the wood.
This is a modeling accessory, not a kit. The base Roden kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
