This figure from the AMMO of Mig Jimenez brand represents a German military pilot of the Second World War period in 1:32 scale. It completes a finished aircraft model or an airfield scene and gives it a human sense of scale, because without a figure the size of a machine is hard to judge.
Aircrew went about in a coverall or in a leather suit, and with that went a helmet with earphones, goggles and a life vest. It is precisely these elements that make an aviation figure recognizable at first glance and set it apart from infantry. In 1:32 scale the figure stands around six centimeters tall, so the face and the small items of gear are a full task for a brush. In large scales it is already visible how the straps sit and how the fabric falls over a belt, so it pays to spend time on the edges of the folds.
Start with a thin primer that does not flood the engraving of the folds. Build the skin from a mid flesh tone through a darker glaze in the recesses to light highlights on the raised areas. The leather of the clothing will be brought to life by a light sheen, while the textile should be left flat, because the contrast of the two surfaces visually animates the figure. Rather suggest the eyes than draw them literally. Apply the metal buckles and badges at the very end, with a tiny brush and with your little finger resting on the surface.
