About product

Yakovlev Yak-3: a cockpit masking set in 1:72

A masking set from the maker MH models for a model of the Soviet Yak-3 fighter in 1:72 scale. It is not a kit and not parts for the cockpit, but an aid for painting: the masks cover the glazing of the canopy, so you can spray the frames in the same paint and with the same finish as the rest of the airframe. The transition between the frame and the surface then looks the way it should, and nowhere is there a heavier deposit left by a brush. The set is cut for the parts of the Heller, Smer or Kovozavody Prostejov kit; on a model from another maker the shapes may not match.

The real subject

The Yak-3 was among the best Soviet fighters of the Second World War. It came out of consistently lightening and aerodynamically refining an older design: it got a smaller wing, lower weight and a Klimov engine, which gave it exceptional agility and rate of climb at low and medium altitudes. That is precisely where most of the fighting on the Eastern Front took place, so the machine found itself in situations that suited it. Pilots of the French Normandie-Niemen group flew it too, which makes the Yak-3 a familiar subject outside the countries of the former Soviet Union as well.

Usage tips

Degrease the glazing before masking and let it dry thoroughly. Set the pieces in place with tweezers and press them down above all around the edge, so that paint does not creep under the rim. It works well to spray the interior shade first and then the outer camouflage, so the frame will have the right color inside and out. Take the mask off while the paint is only dry to the touch.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of Soviet Second World War fighters in 1:72
  • Modelers who want the cockpit frames sprayed rather than brushed
  • Those interested in the Normandie-Niemen subject
  • Those who want to shorten the most laborious part of the painting

FAQ

It is not. It is a masking set for painting a Yak-3 model in 1:72 scale.

A brush leaves a heavier deposit and an uneven edge. Spraying through a mask gives a flat surface and a sharp edge, which shows a great deal in a small scale.

Its low weight and refined aerodynamics. At low and medium altitudes it was among the most agile fighters of its day.
