Cut self-adhesive masks of kabuki tape for models of the Douglas DC-3 and its military versions, the C-47A and C-48C, in 1:48 scale, in the highest level offered, EXPERT. New Ware grades its sets into BASIC, ADVANCED and EXPERT by how much they cover; at the highest level the coverage usually goes beyond the main glazing, so the exact list of parts comes with the set.
On a transport aircraft the difference between the levels shows more than on a single-seat fighter. The fuselage of the DC-3 is lined with windows, the cockpit has divided windscreens, and further small areas have to be protected while spraying. The more work the set takes over, the less is left for cutting tape by hand, and on this type that is a difference of several evenings. If you are building a model for the display cabinet and want every frame to be the same width, the highest level is the most sensible choice.
Work methodically: keep the sheet whole and take the parts off one at a time according to the list, otherwise it is easy to lose track with so many pieces. Lay each mask dry, check it and only then press it down around the edge with a toothpick. Spray several thin coats; one heavy coat will creep under the edge. Take the masks off shortly after the paint has dried, at an angle rather than straight up. Put the rest of the sheet with the unused parts back in its packaging away from dust and direct light: the tack lasts for years and will come in handy on the next build of the same type.
