Before you start, wash the figure in lukewarm water with a drop of detergent and let it dry; on a greasy surface the paint curdles and peels off when touched. Then work in thin coats. Always thin your paint and build the shade up from several transparent coats instead of one thick one, which fills the detail. Decide first where the light falls on the figure from, and keep to that decision over the whole figure, or the shadows will contradict each other. Protect a finished figure from dust in a display case, because dust is hard to remove from a broken surface.
