Post-apocalyptic subjects are among the fastest growing branches of modeling, and industrial buildings are the ideal backdrop for them. Pipework, tanks, concrete footings and crumbling structures offer plenty of surfaces on which rust, mold and encroaching vegetation all come out, and the scene works even without a single figure. The base can be combined with figures from fantasy as well as modern military ranges, but it will serve just as well as a display object in its own right on a shelf.
Layering is the basis. Start with a dark base, lighten the surfaces so that the texture appears, and only then add color layers of rust from orange to brownish black. Make running stains and streaks with thin washes drawn from top to bottom, and dust and sediment with pigments. Suggest green films and mold only slightly; an exaggerated amount flattens a scene. Finally add the small clutter that gives the composition a story.
