The first sheet of the Vietnam series from Star Decals in 1:72 scale gathers the markings of tanks used by the army of South Vietnam, known by the abbreviation ARVN. It covers three types from different generations and weight categories and makes it possible to build a vehicle with a real membership of a unit.
The M24 Chaffee was a light tank from the end of the Second World War with a short 75mm gun and torsion bar suspension. It was replaced by the M41 Walker Bulldog, a postwar light tank with a 76mm gun and markedly higher mobility. The heaviest type on the sheet is the M48A3 Patton, a medium tank with a 90mm gun and diesel drive, which the South Vietnamese units received only in a later phase of the conflict. Machines separated by roughly a quarter of a century of development thus stand side by side.
Vehicles of this battlefield often carried markings on the sloping and busy areas of the side skirts. There it works well to seat the drawing with a brush and a little water first and only then to soak the excess up with the corner of a paper towel. A lighter coat of softener applied twice works more reliably than one heavy dose.
