The needle and the nozzle form one pair in an airbrush: the needle meters the paint according to how deep it sits in the nozzle, and a diameter of 0.30 mm is the most common medium size, with which you will manage both a narrow line and the continuous area of a whole fuselage. The needle is at the same time the most vulnerable part of the whole instrument. It is enough for the airbrush to fall point down, or for the needle to be pushed forward through the nozzle during cleaning, and a bent or blunted point starts to scatter the paint sideways and to spit.
Check that the diameter of 0.30 mm matches your nozzle and that the needle belongs to your type of instrument. A needle from another airbrush tends to be a different length or to have a differently shaped taper, and it then does not seal in the nozzle. You will find the designation of the replacement part in the instructions for the instrument.
Before replacing it, clean the airbrush and loosen the chuck nut at the rear. Always draw the needle out backwards; never push it forward through the nozzle. Insert the new needle gently until the point rests lightly against the nozzle, and only then tighten the nut. After every session, take the needle out, wipe it with a cloth and a thinner matching the paint used and inspect the point against the light. Dried paint on the needle is the most common cause of an airbrush ceasing to draw a thin line.
