The set A cow in the pasture brings a figure of cattle captured while cropping grass. It is not a model of hardware nor a kit of a vehicle but a scenic element that is seated beside an aircraft, a vehicle or a farm building and gives the scene its scale. An animal at the edge of an area is exactly what immediately gives away how large the object next to it is, and turns a static display case into a picture of a particular place.
In 1:48 scale what gets built most often are field airfields, village homesteads and hardware parked away from the fighting line. Cattle in a meadow behind a fence belong to the setting of improvised airfields on both the western and the eastern front just as they do to postwar scenes. The figure also works on its own as a small vignette on a piece of grassy base.
The coat comes out when the base shade is brightened with a dry brush over the back and the edges and darkened, by contrast, on the underbelly and between the legs. It pays to paint the patches only once the base has dried, so that the transitions are not crisp. The hooves and the lower legs will take a little dust pigment in the same tone as the terrain quite well; the animal then merges optically with the base. Place the head bent down to the grass so that the mouth really touches the growth, because a gap gives away that the animal is only standing.
