An injection-molded plastic kit of the launch vehicle 15U175 of the RS-12M1 Topol-M missile complex in 1:35 from the manufacturer Trumpeter. It is an exceptionally extensive kit: according to the manufacturer over 1100 parts on 26 sprues, photo-etch, metal parts (a steel tube), clear parts for the cab and hollow rubber tires with an engraved tread. The drive train is worked out completely, with the engine, the gearbox, the transfer cases and the axle suspension. According to the manufacturer the model can be built in the transport position and in the raised launch position, and that is the main reason people get this kit.
The dimensions, read them carefully: the finished model is 638 mm long and 115 mm wide. It is one of the largest models of ground vehicles that can be built. In the raised position the model also grows considerably in height. Do measure your display case before buying.
TEL is the abbreviation for Transporter Erector Launcher, that is a vehicle which transports, erects and launches the missile. The point of a mobile launch vehicle is technically simple: the missile is constantly moved and hidden, so the opponent cannot reliably locate and destroy it with a first strike, unlike a fixed silo with a known position. The RS-12M1 Topol-M is a Russian intercontinental ballistic missile; its mobile version rides on the huge multi-axle chassis of the MZKT-79221 type with eight axles and every wheel either steered or driven. The vehicle carries the missile in a transport and launch canister, which is raised hydraulically into the vertical position before launch.
An extensive kit for experienced modelers; reckon with a long build. Finish and paint the chassis, the drive train and the suspension before you close everything up with the body; eight axles call for careful seating, so that the model stands level on all its wheels. Decide in advance whether you are building the transport or the launch position, because it affects the procedure as well as the room the model will take. Glue the rubber tires with cyanoacrylate and use a thin cement on the plastic. Paint with an airbrush over a primer; on the large areas of the canister the paint holds better in thin coats. Weathering: dust and mud effects on the wheels and the underside, restrained washes into the pressings, mild rubbing on the edges. Heavy rust does not belong here, as this is carefully maintained equipment.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
