An injection-molded plastic kit of the last British cruiser tank of the Second World War in 1:35 scale from the Japanese firm Tamiya. It is a modern tooling, not a polished-up kit from the 1970s: the panel lines are scribed cleanly and straight, the rivets stand out in relief and are asking to be brought out with a wash and a dry brush. The hull and the turret are made up of individual panels, which is a modern way of dividing the parts. The package includes a clear sprue (vision blocks and lights), link-and-length tracks, that is a combination of individual links in the curved areas and longer straight parts at the top and bottom, not a rubber band, and two busts of tank crewmen in winter kit. The decals cover two marking options, both machines of the 11th Armoured Division in Germany in the spring of 1945.
The Comet came about by developing the Cromwell: it got a lower silhouette, a partly cast turret and above all the new 77 mm HV gun, a reduced version of the 17-pounder anti-tank gun that fired the same 76.2 mm rounds with a smaller charge. It was therefore effective even against the late German tanks including Panthers and Tigers, and it still kept what British cruiser tanks were famous for, namely speed (over 50 km/h on the road). It entered service with the 29th Armoured Brigade of the 11th Armoured Division and went into action only after the crossing of the Rhine, that is in the spring of 1945. It is rightly spoken of as one of the best British tanks of the war, which came too late. It was an interim solution until its successor the Centurion matured, and after the war the two served alongside each other.
A classic build in polystyrene: thin cement for plastic applied with a small brush, the parts cut off cleanly and cleaned up. Assemble the running gear and align it perfectly before you close the hull, because the wheels have to sit on one plane or the tracks cannot be laid nicely. Glue the link-and-length tracks in sections and let the upper run sag slightly between the return rollers. Apply a primer before painting and spray the base British green (choose the SCC 15 or bronze green shade according to your own reference) with an airbrush; once dry, lay a gloss clear coat under the decals and then take it back to flat. Weathering: a dark wash in the corners and the rivets, dust and mud pigments on the treads and the lower hull.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
