A plastic kit of the Italian railway shunting locomotive that the Italian state railways listed as classes 206, 207 and 208 and that is known among modelers by the nickname Sogliola. Besides the parts of the machine itself, the set from the Spanish brand AK Interactive holds a section of track and a figure, so a small scene can be built from it rather than just an isolated model.
The Automotore was a light shunting machine derived from the German Breuer IV rail tractor, which was built in Italy under license from the turn of the 1920s and 1930s. Hundreds were built and their task was to move individual wagons about stations, sidings and transshipment yards, where committing a large locomotive would make no sense. In the summer of 1942 several dozen of these machines reached North Africa, where, once the line from Tobruk toward El Alamein had been restored, they handled the movement of supplies for Italian and German units. After the war, similar machines served in ordinary railway operation for many decades.
The kit offers parts for the wartime and the postwar form of the machine, so choose the version right at the start and work to it, so that you do not glue up openings you will need later. It is sensible to paint and bring out the cab and the engine compartment before the body is closed up. Railway vehicles tend to be heavily worn, so it pays to work with dark washes in the riveted joints, with rust shades on the buffer and with dust pigments around the chassis. The railheads and the wheel treads, by contrast, are polished to a clean metallic shine.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
