This set from the Polish manufacturer Aber belongs to its range of turned barrels. It replaces the plastic barrel from the box with a part machined on a lathe: it has a perfectly round cross section, a crisply cut muzzle and, above all, no lengthwise parting seam left by the mold. It is on a weapon as long and slender as a gun of 128 mm caliber that the seam and a slight warp of an injection-molded part show most. This is an accessory for a kit in 1:35 scale, not a model in its own right.
The VK 100.01 (P) Mammut is a German super-heavy tank project from the Porsche company that became the development forerunner of the later Maus vehicle. It stayed at the stage of prototype construction and never reached series production. The planned main armament was a gun of 128 mm caliber, that is the same class of weapon the Germans put into the Jagdtiger tank destroyer. The long barrel with its massive muzzle brake is the most conspicuous element of the whole silhouette of the vehicle and decides how the model comes across.
First degrease the metal part with alcohol or mineral spirits, otherwise paint will not hold on it. If need be, carefully widen the seating hole in the turret mantlet with a round file, so that the barrel sits without pressure and stays precisely on the axis. It is glued with a thicker cyanoacrylate glue or with two-part epoxy; ordinary cement for plastic will not join metal. Apply a primer meant for metal before painting and only then the base shade. Darken the muzzle and the inside of the muzzle brake and add a fine deposit of soot, so that the barrel does not come across as freshly machined.
The accessory is supplied unpainted and without the base kit. Glue, paints and other accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
