This set from Metallic Details replaces the exhaust sections of both engines of the F-15 model in 1:48 scale with resin castings complemented by photo-etched sheet. The pattern with external flaps matches the nozzles on which the overlapping segments around the outer circumference are covered, so it is a particular type of nozzle rather than a universal replacement. The aircraft model is not included in the package. The set is intended for the GWH or Revell kits.
The F-15 is an American twin-engine fighter with a high-mounted wing of large area and a pair of vertical tail surfaces. The two engines in the rear fuselage exhaust through variable nozzles whose area changes with the operating regime, so on a parked aircraft the nozzles are often spread to differing degrees. The transition from the fuselage into the nozzles is one of the places where the quality of a model shows most. Derived versions of the aircraft also differed in their powerplants during service, so the look of the nozzles is not the same on every machine.
Wash the castings in warm soapy water, cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a cutting disc and level the mating faces by wet sanding with respiratory protection. It is bonded with super glue (cyanoacrylate). Separate the photo-etched parts with a sharp knife on a hard surface and bend them in a bending tool. Assemble and paint the nozzles away from the model. A metallic look calls for a smooth base: a primer, fine sanding, a metallic shade, then toning of the individual segments and a dark wash inside. Photographs of real machines show markedly scorched outer surfaces, so do not be sparing with the heat tints.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The base GWH or Revell kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
