An injection-molded plastic kit from Copper State Models, a manufacturer specializing in equipment of the First World War and the interwar period. The set contains 162 parts in gray plastic, 6 parts in clear plastic, decals for four marking options of the RAF in the Middle East and color, eighteen-page instructions. The tooling is finely drawn and the parts count is moderate — the kit is manageable, but it rewards careful work.
In British terminology a tender is a supply and support vehicle — and an armored tender is its armored version. After the First World War the Royal Air Force administered extensive territories of the Middle East under a regime of air control: aircraft patrolled over the desert, but on the ground the airfields, the convoys and the outlying posts needed protecting. For that purpose the RAF armored car companies were formed, which in the 1920s operated in Iraq and Kurdistan. The vehicles were built on modified commercial truck chassis, which were armored on the spot. They patrolled remote routes, escorted convoys and secured isolated garrisons in harsh desert conditions. It is a very unusual and little modeled subject — an armored vehicle in the service of an air force, in the middle of the desert, in the years between the wars.
Build it in the classic way: the chassis and the suspension separately first, and only then the armored body. Take the parts off the sprues with a sharp cutter and clean them up so that the fine edges of the armor stay straight. Painting: desert and sand shades over a primer, with an airbrush. The Cartograf decals are thin and pliable — they need a gloss surface and a decal softener. Then comes dry, dusty weathering: light pigments on the wheels and the underside, fine chipping on the edges of the plates and the rivets, restrained emphasis on the panels. A vehicle from a desert patrol should be dusty, not muddy — that is the difference from European subjects.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
