Responsibility details are not available.
A subject-wise unusual item from the offering of the Czech manufacturer Black Dog. It joins a British soldier with a homing pigeon, that is with a means of communication that turns up in modeling scenes only rarely. The sequence label No. 1 suggests that the manufacturer has issued a follow-up to the item.
Homing pigeons belonged to the ordinary equipment of signals units throughout the First World War and, to a limited extent, in the Second as well. A message was rolled up into a small capsule fixed to the leg and the bird was released in the direction of its home loft, often a mobile one placed on a wagon or in a trailer. The advantage was clear: a pigeon needed neither a cable that could be cut nor a radio set that could be located. Losses were high, reliability surprisingly good, and some of the birds were awarded decorations after the war.
The bird is the finest place on the figure: feathers stand out when you apply a lighter tone with a dry brush over a darker base and let the lower layer show through as you do so. Keep the uniform in a muted range and add liveliness only through wear: dusty boots, a darker hem at the knees, a rubbed edge on the bag. The scene will benefit from simple surroundings, a piece of trench wall or the side of a vehicle for instance, so that the viewer grasps the situation without explanation.
