This plastic kit from the maker Tamiya captures the British conversion of the American tank destroyer M10, rearmed with the 17-pounder anti-tank gun. Tamiya sets are among the most precisely fitting on the market, so the model is a good choice even for modelers who are starting out with military vehicles in 1:35 scale.
The Achilles came about through a British modification of the American M10 vehicle. The original three-inch weapon was replaced by the British Ordnance QF 17-pounder gun, that is 76.2 mm, which substantially increased penetrating power and made it possible to fight well-armored targets too. Its recognition features are the long barrel with a muzzle brake and the counterweight at the rear of the turret, which balanced the weight of the longer weapon. The vehicle kept its open turret and fairly thin armor: it was conceived as a mobile anti-tank weapon meant to fire from prepared positions, not as a tank for the front of an attack. The designation IIC distinguishes the vehicles converted from a later production version of the M10.
An open turret means that the inside is visible on the finished model. So build and paint the turret interior, the breech of the weapon and the ammunition stowage before you close the turret by seating it on the hull. Check the long barrel against the axis of the vehicle so that it is not twisted. Paint the running gear and the lower hull before fitting the fenders and the tools. British vehicles were painted in a dark olive shade; a gentle lightening of the upper surfaces, a wash into the welds and rivets, chipped paint on the edges and a layer of dust on the running gear all work well.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
